Finches & Starlings: Reception Classes

Welcome to our Reception page!

We will update this page with information about our learning, and share photos and videos from our curiosity time.

Drawing Club!

We introduced Drawing Club in Reception at the beginning of the Spring term. The children have been so motivated to draw and write, it has been wonderful to see!

Drawing Club is a concept created by Greg Bottrill which enriches language skills, develops fine motor skills and immerses children into a world of imagination where anything can happen.

Each week, Drawing Club uses a story or cartoon clip as stimulus for sparking imaginative ideas, drawing and writing secret codes.  Each stimulus has a set of vocabulary which children learn and invent actions for as part of the lesson.

We have had a busy start to the second half of the Autumn term in Reception! We have been exploring Rangoli rice patterns and making Diya lamps as part of our learning about the festival of Diwali. We have continued to learn about space and the names of the planets in our solar system.

Next Wednesday (15th November), we have some special visitors coming with their Space drama workshop for us to take part in which we are looking forward to very much!

We have been learning to 'subitise' numbers to 3 in Maths which means counting quickly using our eyes and we are continuing to work on forming the letters of our names correctly. We have also been learning about Remembrance day and why we wear poppies. Some of us made some beautiful poppy pictures using our printing skills!

Weekly Challenges

We are very excited in Reception as this week we introduced weekly challenges!

Every week, we will set the children 6 challenges to complete throughout the week during Curiosity Time. The challenges link to a range of areas of learning, for example Maths, Literacy, Expressive Arts and Design, Physical, Understanding the World etc. If the children complete all 6 challenges, they will receive a certificate. The one below is from this week.

Have a look and ask your child which ones they completed!
